Major Mexican retirement fund migrates to Mimer SQL — new case study

Major Mexican Retirement Fund Modernizes Its Core Systems — Migrating from Oracle Rdb to Mimer SQL on OpenVMS x86-64

An ongoing project ensures long-term stability, performance, and platform continuity on OpenVMS’s new x86-64 architecture.

Intro

We’re proud to share details of an ongoing modernization initiative with one of Mexico’s largest retirement funds, which is currently migrating from Oracle Rdb to Mimer SQL, deploying on the new OpenVMS x86-64 platform.

This strategic move reflects a forward-looking commitment to reliable, standards-based database technology — ensuring operational continuity and future-proof performance for critical financial systems.

Background

The retirement fund’s legacy database infrastructure, based on older hardware and software, has reached its architectural limits. With the organization transitioning to OpenVMS x86-64, there is a clear need for a database platform that offers enterprise-grade performance, SQL compliance, and a strong development roadmap for the new architecture.

Mimer SQL was chosen to meet these requirements — combining proven reliability with full support for OpenVMS x86-64, enabling a smooth evolution of the fund’s core systems.

Solution

Together with Mimer Information Technology, the client is executing a carefully structured migration program that includes:

  1. Schema and data mapping from Oracle Rdb to Mimer SQL
  2. Automated conversion tools complemented by targeted manual adjustments
  3. Performance validation and tuning under live conditions on OpenVMS x86-64

The migration approach ensures that existing business logic and application interfaces are preserved while leveraging the benefits of the modern platform.

Progress and Expected Outcomes

The project is already demonstrating strong results:

  • Smooth migration phases with uninterrupted operations
  • Improved performance and scalability on OpenVMS x86-64
  • Reduced licensing and maintenance complexity
  • Future-ready architecture aligned with the organization’s long-term IT strategy

“Our goal is to secure a robust and sustainable database platform for the future,” says Fernando Rocha, Chief Executive Officer of ARS, the company doing the migration. “Mimer SQL provides the right foundation for this transition — reliable, efficient, and ready for the next generation of OpenVMS.”
